Phantom 3 Standard Review

Add to compare

PThe ‘Advanced version’ of Phantom 3 was also introduced for those who weren’t that interested in 4k video. Both of these drones did a fine job as a consumer drone. This time DJI wanted an even more affordable yet feature full drone for their consumers. Therefore, DJI came up with ‘Phantom 3 Standard.

An affordable drone for everyone. It offers some pretty neat features for the price. For 499$ it’s really hard to beat this drone.

The drone carries the same language as professional and advanced versions of Phantom 3. Same quadcopter shaped drone with a camera assembly mounted on a 3axis gimbal. However, there are no vision positioning features beneath its body now.

Also, the Phantom 3 Standard isn’t equipped with the Lightbridge technology. Therefore, it has a bit shorter range than most of the drones and it’s hard to be flown indoors. But still it is a GPS drone which means that you can fly it for a decent amount of time.

The Camera this drone comes with is interesting. It’s not limited to full HD. It can record quad HD videos; {2.7k} up to 30 fps. Also it has a 12MP camera. The exciting thing here is that this camera has Panasonic sensor built in {bit new for the Phantom series}.

This helps the drone capture decent amount of detail with acceptable dynamic range. Here, DJI hasn't cut any corners which is a great news. It’s great to see a consumer drone having a good camera system.

The controller is slightly different than other Phantoms. Visually it’s identical. Internally it doesn’t have Lightbridge built in and it has fewer controls. For instance , you won't get to see a direct video shoot button.

On the other hand, it is decent considering the price with at least having the basic controls. It can provide 1-kilometer range and last but not the least, the controller has good stamina.

Intelligent flying modes:

Intelligent flight modes are still offered with Phantom 3 Standard. They can be used, using the DJI go application on the smartphone. But, some users have complained that they don’t work like they do on other phantoms.

Well, at least DJI is offering such modes. Considering the price no other drone manufacturer provides them. They will work most of the time but all you need is the stronger connection between the drone and the controller.

Phantom 3 Standard has excellent battery backup and it can be easily flown up to 25 minutes. It’s an intelligent battery so it does support back to home functionality. All in all, phantom 3 Standard can be flown in the air for a good amount of time without the worries of power failure.

Phantom 3 Standard is an excellent choice to make in terms of a budget drone. It can be flown for a good amount of time and as decent image quality. Moreover, the camera is stabilized. On another hand, it lacks some of the DJI’S premium add-ons like Lightbridge technology but considering the price it’s hard to argue the value this drone offers.

In short, Phantom 3 Standard is a consumer drone accessible for everyone.
