Parrot Bebop 2 review

Add to compare
Parrot recently announced their new bebop drone the ‘Parrot Bebop 2’. The original bebop went well for Parrot because of its affordable price and simple operation. The new creation continues this trend.

The new Parrot Bebop 2 does look familiar from the outside but it offers some neat features for the price. For the novices, it offers easy operation and flight modes right out of the box. It’s a very easy and fun to fly drone.

Design:

The drone is mostly made out of plastic. One reason why Parrot Bebop 2 is so light. Apart from propellers, no any moving parts are located on the body of the drone. Propellers are made up of sort of flexible plastic. This allows the drone to handle minimal crashes without any major damage. This makes Parrot Bebop 2 ideal drone for beginner’s flyers.

This time parrot included a led light on the back of the drone so that pilot can have an eye on it while it is in the air.

Also, beneath the main body, there is a new positioning sensor. This will help drone hover at lower altitudes accurately and safely without touching or hitting the ground.

Camera:

Unfortunately, the camera hasn’t been tweaked much. It’s the same old fisheye lens coupled with a 14-MP sensor. The major con here is the lens flaring. It’s quite noticeable in most of the daylight shots. Therefore, stills it captures aren’t breathtaking.

Dynamic range remains the same. In the video department, it can capture 1080p up to 30 fps. Specs wise everything looks alright here but the actual results aren’t that great. The video is just fine. Again it lacks that detail and sharpness of a 1080p clip. Bitrate is relatively low. In low light, grains are even more visible. On the other hand, under good lighting video looks fine for such a drone. Definitely, It is useable but to an extent only.

Battery life:

Battery life has been improved significantly. Bebop 2 now comes with a large 2700 mAh battery {previously it was only 1200 mAh}. Parrot claims that Parrot Bebop 2 can now remain in the air for 25 minutes.

In reality, it depends on how you operate the drone. Still, it can be flown for 20 odd minutes easily given the large capacity battery. This a great new add-on as the original bebop could only manage 10 minutes in the air.

Performance:

In the air, Parrot Bebop 2 remains fairly stable even at higher altitudes. The speed of drone is great. It can follow a moving car at speeds up to 30 Mph.

It can handle moderate breeze easily keeping the video stable and smooth. Due to the onboard GPS, drone remains stable in the air.

Verdict:

Parrot Bebop 2 is clearly targeted towards beginners. It has a limited amount of storage {that too built in}, a poor camera and fairly basic feature set.

Despite all this, its affordable price and ease of use make it a great buy for newbies. It’s fairly lightweight and compact, can handle casual crashes. Its battery life is much improved now. With the addition of new positioning sensor at the bottom, it can hover more precisely, especially in tighter surroundings. In such crowded drone market Parrot Bebop 2 won’t let down any of its buyers considering its price tag.
